As with the Pompidou Centre, the Lloyds building wears its services on its exterior. There were two reasons for this:
The services have a much shorter lifespan than the building itself, much like the engine of a car compared to the bodywork.
Having them on the exterior leaves more space inside for program.
Having my pipework easily visible adds a character element to the interior, enforcing the honesty in the process that is lacking from the beauty industry. This will vary in visibility from the exterior, depending on viewer position and time of day.
